CHAS night at the Racewall was all about raising money for Rachel House and the drivers and spectators certainly weren’t stinting during the meeting.
At this stage it looks like a fairly healthy sum of money, probably around £2000, is heading the charity’s way! However until all the
proceeds have been tallied up the final figure will not be known.
Arran McGowan spectacularly rolled his ministox on the pit bend after hitting the wall with the car landing on all four wheels. Luckily Arran stepped out of his car unhurt.
John Hogg encountered engine troubles during a practice run and didn’t reappear whilst Paul Reid saw his oil pressure disappear at the end of heat two.
Alec Cunningham and Liam Rennie both hit the wall hard during the last of the mini races but whilst Rennie restarted Cunningham retired.
KIRKALDY ON SONG
The first of the formula II heats ended with Alan Kirkaldy going through to win from Garry Sime and George MacMillan Jnr. Heat two ended with Sime just managing to keep Kirkaldy at bay as they raced to the line with MacMillan Jnr again in third.
Kenny Mitchell led the cars away at the start of the final but was caught and passed by Gregor Turner. A few laps later Kirkaldy reeled him in and took the lead with Sime claiming second a lap later. Chris Burgoyne was on a charge and he started to pick of those ahead on a regular basis but ran out of time to catch Kirkaldy who picked up his second win of the night. Burgoyne ended up in second with MacMillan Jnr again in third.
Burgoyne won the Grand National leading home Sime and MacMillan Jnr with Kirkaldy in ninth place.
A CAMIE DOUBLE
The Ministox drivers were as usual in good form with McGowan rolling, Cunningham and Rennie hitting the wall hard whilst Dale Buchan was sent spinning right at the start of a race.
Camie McGowan went on to win the opening heat and he led home Cunningham and Zak Gilmour. Cunningham had a comfortable heat two victory and he was clear of C. McGowan and Rennie when the chequer dropped. Rennie came out on top in heat three and he led home C. McGowan and Cunningham.
The last of the Ministox races saw Rennie and Cunningham crash on the pit bend allowing C. McGowan through to win from Gilmour and Gemma Russell.
TWO-SEATERS
The drivers with passenger seats were whisking paying spectators around the track prior to the meeting and there wasn’t an unhappy looking face when they left the car!
I was even squeezed into a hot rod and whisked around the track at break neck speed even although I didn’t think that I had given Ian
Donaldson a bad write up! It was certainly an eye opener.
However there was a bit of a hairy moment when smoke appeared from Tam Linden’s lightning rod and he pulled into the layby helping his passenger out as quickly as he could whilst the fire marshals quickly extinguished any possibility of fire.
Quite a few passengers were treated to the drivers carrying out donuts at the end of the races with the cars covered in blue tyre smoke!
