The last banger race of the night at the Cowdenbeath Racewall on Saturday night produced one of the most spectacular shunts of the night ending with the cars of David Moore and Jon Taylor rolling and as they did so ended up on top of another couple of cars. Their cars hit another car and as a result rose high into the air before coming to rest on top of the other cars with three other drivers getting caught up in the incident. All the drivers escaped unhurt. There was a convoy of drivers from the North Of England congregated at the border before heading north to the Racewall, similar to how they appeared at Newtongrange to take part in the “Take the High Road Final” sponsored by one time racer Russell Taylor.
MOODIE TAKES THE HIGH ROAD AND RETAINS THE TURNER TROPHY
There were 28 formula II drivers at the track including Jon Palmer from Devon, Tom Adcroft from Burnley whilst from the north of England came John and Paul Broatch, Dave Pannett, Sam Wagner, Barry Turner, Mark Dews, John Dowson, Geoff Forster, and Mike Kirk. The opening heat saw Gordon Moodie go charging through to win from Robbie Dawson and Gregor Turner. In heat two Chris Burgoyne took the honours and he crossed the finish line clear of Dawson and Sam Wagner. In heat three Moodie took the win from George MacMillan Jnr and Jon Palmer but Chris Burgoyne had been first home but had been penalised for an infringement and ended up in fourth place.
The final was a cracking race and whilst Raymond Dick was the initial leader, Paul Reid was soon through into the lead. The race was suspended on lap six when Palmer and Burgoyne clashed with the former ending up clambering up the wall. Within two laps of the restart Moodie was through into the lead and he went on to win both the Take the High Road and Turner Trophies for his pains and he led home Dawson and MacMillan Jnr. Dawson won the Grand National from MacMillan Jnr and Moodie who had benefited from a race suspension during the early stages of the race.
SHEVILL Jnr’s HAT TRICK AND KEEPS THE TURNER TROPHY
The saloons were in top form and their races were full of incidents with plenty of cars bouncing off walls and spinning. There certainly was no shortage of action with drivers fighting for position in most of the races. The white yellow challenge heat ended with Aly Strachan winning from Kyle Hegg and Adam Low. The opening heat saw Stuart Shevill Jnr go through to win from Stuart Drobinski and Chris Carey. Shevill Jnr again got the better of the exchanges to win heat two from Barry Russell and Drobinski. In the final Ian Low was soon through into the lead but had A. Low and Ryan Forbes in close order. Star drivers Drobinski, Russell, Shevill Jnr and Ian McLaughlin were dicing and as a result weren’t closing the gap as quickly as they should. Forbes made it through to second but was caught out as the red graders sent him crashing into the wall. Although Low crossed the line in first he was penalised for an earlier infringement and it was Shevill Jnr who collected the Turner trophy from McLaughlin and I. Low.
A McGOWAN DOUBLE
There was a good turn out of Ministox drivers who as usual didn’t hang about and showed they knew how to use the bumper. Michael Stewart was back in action after being missing from the scene for sometime. Heat one saw Dale Buchan go through to win from Zak Gilmour and Kyle Russell. Camie McGowan then went on to win heat two from Liam Rennie and Gilmour. McGowan made it two wins in a row when he charged through the field to win from Gilmour and K. Russell.
BANGER DELIGHT
The opening heat of the night for the bangers was their Scottish Championship and it proved to be quite a race. Tubby Thomson went straight into the lead but soon had Eion Harkess in close order. Mark Delgarno and Andrew Webster tangled and spun but when Neil Naismith crashed heavily the race was suspended. Marc Lumsden went into the lead but with four to go Harkess sent him spinning and he reeled off the remaining laps to win from Doug Thomson and Michael Muirhead. E. Harkess went on to win the meeting final whilst Thomson put in a few heavy challenges as he won the Destruction Derby.
